Welcome to Over Seas, an approved fanlisting for expats and the expatriation concept. Thanks to Emma-Jane for letting me adopt it :)
Because we are not all bilingual and some of us may have ended here by accident, may I explain what is expatriation... and I like to explain word so leave me my fun ;)
Expatration word has it's origin in latin, from Expatriare and is compose of two words.
Ex : mean past.
Patria : mean native land.
So expatriation is about leaving oneself native land and, consequently, living in another one :) Which makes expats !
Now, why would someone would like, or dream, to leave its country, family and friends ? There are many answers to that question. Actually, expatriation is an individual choice and we all have different reason to leave and let me tell you that expats don't really miss their native land, otherwise they wouldn't be expats but exiles :)
Reasons are different for each expats but one thing is the same : why do they like so much to live abroad. Emma-Jane explains it better than me.
Living in a different country (...) implies adapting to a different lifestyle, a different language, different customs, and hell, different food. It gives you another vision of life, another way of seeing things and truly opens your mind. Being an expat generally gives you a greater acceptance and respect of others and their culture, which is why I appreciate this lifestyle so much.
